Scottish Dance Lessons FAQ

How much are the dance lessons?
They are free!

Are these lessons for beginners?
Dancers of all levels are welcome! We teach many dances of varying levels. With some practice and effort, you can learn to do almost all of them by the time of our events!

What's Scottish dancing like?
Scottish dancing is usually done with a partner and often with a group of people (usually in 4-couple set). Part of Scottish dancing culture involves dancing with everyone in your group. For the best experience, we highly encourage dancers to change partners for each dance!

How do I find a partner?
During dance lessons you can dance with anyone! If you are a beginner, we highly recommend pairing up with a veteran dancer, even if you came with a friend or domestic partner. This is so you can learn the dances with someone who already knows it.

For Muckleshunter, our annual spring ceilidh, finding a partner is a free-for-all! We will display the dance order for the evening and if you recognize the dance that's called, you can find any partner and get into the appropriate set up for the dance.

For the St Andrew's Ball, you will be given a dance card at the start of the sparkling wine reception. This is where you can mingle with others and write their names on your card. This is where attending dance practices helps because you already know people who know at least some of the dances! Later in the night when each dance is called, find your partner and make your way to the dance floor.

Do I have to do every dance?
If you attend dance lessons we HIGHLY encourage you to try every dance we teach! Even if it seems difficult at first, you can only get better with practice! We teach up to 16 dances in a season, which can be daunting but each dance is repeated at least once at a later date as a refresher.

If you don't attend lessons and you plan to attend one of our events, we recommend trying dances that are beginner friendly (1~3 stars) even if you don't know it! There are a handful of dances where you just need a partner who knows the dance to assist you. If you are in an 4-couple set, we recommend starting from the 3rd or 4th couple position so you can watch others before it's your turn to lead the dance. Conversely, f
or dances that are more advanced (4~5 stars), it's a great time to rest, grab a drink and watch! 😉

Do I need to register for every dance practice date?
No, you only need to register once per season! Once we open dance lesson registrations for the season and you sign up, you are registered for all of the dates listed in your confirmation email!

Do I have to go to every lesson?
It's not mandatory to attend each practice, but as the saying goes "practice makes perfect."

How do I know if my name is on the list?
Once we open dance lesson registration for the season, you will receive a confirmation email that includes all the the dance lesson dates that you are signed up for! Just note that you must sign up at least 48 hours prior to any dance lesson in order for your name to make the list in time!

Do I have to buy tickets to the St Andrew's Ball prior to attending the dance practices?
No!

Can I bring a friend or partner to the dance practices even if they won't attend the St Andrew's Ball?
Sure! Once we open up dance lesson registration for the season, just make sure your friend or partner fills out the registration form with their information at least 48 hours prior to practice.

What should I wear to dance lessons?
We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes.

Where is the British Embassy Seoul?
